ELM, ELL, ALL, AIL, AIR, FIR, FAR, OAR, OAK.

A shorter solution is by these six links—Ely, sly, say, bay, bat, oat; and one of these (bay) is also a tree, as was fir, so that the conditions given are fulfilled.
