SCOTT’S
Internal System of
DEFENCE AGAINST FIRE.
(1.) THE FIRE WATCH.
Taylor’s Patent Fire-Watch.
Is a simple apparatus, which will infallibly detect an incipient fire, and give prompt warning in the apartment where the fire is breaking out, and in others, however remote, by ringing a bell or bells—either in the building or outside it. It is simple and safe; introduces no dangerous material; never wears out; and consumes nothing whatever. When once fixed it will last a life-time, if not wilfully or carelessly injured. There is no doubt that ultimately it will be as common at sea as the compass, and on land as the clock.
Price of the portable Instrument complete, with Bell, from 25s. to 50s.,
according to style and finish.
Scott’s Tubular Fire-Watch, an improvement upon Taylor’s can be
applied to any dwelling house, warehouse, factory, shop, or ship, by estimate.
(2.) THE EXTINGUISHER.
Phillip’s Patent Extinguisher
Is the most effective self-acting Fire-Engine in existence. It will put out any fire that is confined to one apartment instantaneously; and may be used without difficulty, even by a boy or girl. It costs nothing to charge it; is a good garden Engine; an excellent window-cleaner; and in all respects thoroughly sound and reliable.
Price from £3 to £5 each, according to size and finish.
(3.) THE ESCAPE.
Scott’s Family Fire Escape
Is capable of being applied to any window from the inside, and will carry a family, in perfect ease and safety, from the highest story, in a few minutes. It is useful also for cleaning windows, and is an excellent lift for getting furniture and other goods into the house.
Price complete, £10.
We have also small Escapes for a man alone, at lower prices. But the Family Fire-Escape is applicable to almost every imaginable case, and may be fully depended upon.
Few fires can become serious on premises where these appliances are used.

THE FIRE DEFENCE COMPANY,
ESTABLISHED TO SUPPLY THE PUBLIC WITH
SCOTT’S
INTERNAL
SYSTEM OF DEFENCE AGAINST FIRE
This System is based on the principle that private endeavour should precede public help, which at once suggests that the Internal ought to be the System proper, the External its supplement. The latter has obviously these inherent defects:—
1—Its appliances are necessarily outside the house in which the fire occurs; 2—They are very often remote from it; 3—They are so cumbrous and complex as to require a staff of strong well-trained men to work them.
Ours, on the contrary—1—Are Internal and always on the spot; 2—the most important of them are self-acting; 3—The whole are so simple and manageable that the most ordinary person may make effective use of them. We therefore supply exactly what is wanting.
How pressing the want is as regards life will be known to all who have not forgotten the many fatal fires of the present year—especially that at Swansea, and the equally awful one in Dublin, which together took away a dozen lives, most of them in their prime.
That property needs more protection than it now has is evident from the fact that the Insurance Companies are increasing their charges.
The last Annual Report of the Royal Insurance Company, as published in the “Daily Telegraph,” says:—
“The fire losses have amounted to £318,946, or nearly 77 per cent. on the premiums received. This is beyond the legitimate percentage, though less than the amount anticipated at one period of the year; and 10 per cent. less than the average ratio of loss recently announced authoritatively as falling upon three other well-known and highly respectable establishments of larger revenue during the year 1865. This combined experience affords, together with the still more disastrous results of some other companies, undeniable evidence that the premium charged upon fire insurance is at present unremunerative. This fact has, however, formed so universal a theme of regretful comment at recent meetings of fire offices, that the Directors content themselves with assuring the Shareholders that they are prepared for a re-arrangement of rates.”
See also the Speech of the Chairman of the Queen Insurance Company, at the last Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders, as given in “Gore’s General Advertiser.”
“Although the business of the Company up to the end of the year had been satisfactory, and had yielded a fair profit, the fire department had been of an unsatisfactory character, their average losses having reached 82½ per cent., which precluded the possibility of dividing anything whatever. He alluded also to the necessity of raising the premium as a general measure. (Sensation.) The Directors had run no risks which they ought not to run, they had gone into no field which their neighbours had not entered into before them, and they had taken every precaution; but fires were so perpetually happening on all sides that he saw no chance of making money.”
We submit that the true remedy for this grave state of things is our Internal System of Defence, which comprises Prevention, Detection, Extinction, and Escape. Very few fires can become formidable where it is established. It reduces the risks of Insurance Companies, to a minimum, by providing honest insurers, with the most effectual safeguard, and lessening as much as possible the chances of fraud. Prices and particulars on application to the undersigned, at the Companys’ offices, 551, Oxford Street, London. W.

CAUTION.
If you have had the misfortune to loose a Tooth, or several Teeth, and wish to replace them economically, do not be led away by the false prices, and specious advertisements which are daily to be met with, in almost every newspaper, or other advertising medium. Recollect! that a very great deal of difference exists between “CHEAPNESS” and “LOWNESS OF PRICE.” “Artificial Teeth,” like various other things, may be obtained low in price, and yet be by no means cheap to the wearer, because, in nine cases out of every ten, they are generally badly constructed, and, if this is the case, “Artificial Teeth” on such a principle, must necessarily become EXPENSIVE articles however LOW the price of the same may be.
Messrs. LEE, the old established Dentists, of Bayswater and Notting Hill, are led to make these remarks from the fact that rarely does a week pass, but they are consulted by patients who have in this manner (through some specious advertisement) not only paid a considerable price for a worthless piece of mechanism, but the mouth itself has been seriously and sometimes irremediably injured, by the imperfect adjustment and deleterious compositions that have been used.
All this might have been avoided if a respectable Dentist had been consulted in the first instance; and, possibly, half the expense saved by the patient.
Messrs. LEE, in offering the benefit of their experience in all cases of Dental defect or deficiency, do so without apology, because it is with satisfaction to themselves that they, with certainty, can allude to the happy results attendant on their own exclusive system of Dentistry. Their long practical experience, in a large and daily increasing practice, enables them with confidence to guarantee to all who may consult them “A THOROUGH RESTORATION OF THE LOST TEETH, by replacing new ones fully equal (in all respects) and frequently FAR SUPERIOR, in durability and beauty, than the originals.”
Messrs. LEE wish it to be thoroughly understood that there are so many adventitious circumstances always affecting the cost of properly constructed “Artificial Teeth,” that it becomes a matter of impossibility to make any particular rule subservient to every case, but they trust that the following scale of charges will enable any one wishing to consult them to form a general idea of the cost where no complication is present.
| Single Teeth | 5/-, 7/6, 10/6, 15/-, and 21/- each. |
| Partial Pieces | 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10 Guineas. |
| Sets of Teeth | 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 Guineas. |
