Transcriber’s Note

A number of typographical errors have been correcteed. Non-English language quotations are, with few exceptions, given as printed. Please see the [transcriber’s notes] at the end of this text for a more complete account of any other textual issues and their resolution.

Footnotes have been consolidated and moved to the end of the text. In the printed version, footnotes were numbered consecutively, beginning anew with each chapter. Here, they have been re-sequenced for uniqueness. Hyperlinked references to those notes in the text and the transcriber’s errata are to the new numbers. There are several footnotes that appear in other footnotes. These have been lettered as [A], [B], and [C]

Some internal page references actually referred to footnotes printed on those pages. Where the references are clear, the hyperlinked references will take the reader to the note.
