Transcriber’s Note
This transcription follows the text of the edition first published by John Hamilton Ltd. in 1928. The following alterations have been made to correct what are believed to be unambiguous printer’s errors:
- Four occurrences of misplaced quotation marks have been repaired.
- “replys” has been changed to “replies” (Ch. V).
- “Cuypers white teeth” has been changed to “Cuypers’ white teeth” (Ch. XXV).
- “Cuyper’s face” has been changed to “Cuypers’ face” (Ch. XXVI).
