- Santa Maria la Mayor. Seat of archbishopric since 1850.
- Bishopric established, 1595; first bishop, Don Bartolomé.
- Cathedral begun in 1585 by Juan de Herrera.
- Continued XVIIth century by Churriguera.
- Escorial style spoilt by grotesque decoration.
- Tower falls down in 1841; new one being erected.
- Rectangular in shape; length, 411 feet; width, 204 feet.
- Transept half-way between apse and western front.
- Croisée surmounted by cupola.
- Only one of four towers was constructed.
