(81) The Sabbath Welcomed.

Welcome! sweet day of rest,

That saw the Lord arise!

Welcome to this reviving breast,

And these rejoicing eyes!

2 The King himself comes near,

And feasts his saints to-day;

Here we may sit and see him here,

And love, and praise, and pray.

3 One day in such a place,

Where thou, my God, art seen,

Is sweeter than ten thousand days

Of pleasurable sin.

4 My willing soul would stay

In such a frame as this,

And sit and sing herself away

To everlasting bliss.

Isaac Watts, 1707

The Sabbath Holy.

O day of rest and gladness,

O day of joy and light!

O balm of care and sadness,

Most beautiful, most bright!

On thee, the high and lowly,

Before th' eternal throne,

Sing Holy! Holy! Holy!

To the great Three in One.

2 On thee, at the creation.

The light first had its birth;

On thee for our salvation,

Christ rose from depths of earth.

On thee, our Lord, victorious,

The Spirit sent from heaven,

And thus on thee, most glorious,

A triple light was given.

3 New graces ever gaining

From this our day of rest,

We reach the rest remaining

To spirits of the blest;

To Holy Ghost be praises,

To Father and to Son;

The church her voice upraises

To thee, blest Three in One.

Christopher Wordsworth, 1858.
