452 Missionary Chant. L.M.

(1027) The Gospel Banner.

Fling out the banner! let it float

Skyward and seaward, high and wide,

The sun that lights its shining folds,

The cross on which the Savior died.

2 Fling out the banner! angels bend

In anxious silence o'er the sign,

And vainly seek to comprehend

The wonder of the love divine.

3 Fling out the banner! heathen lands

Shall see from far the glorious sight;

And nations, crowding to be born,

Baptize their spirits in its light.

4 Fling out the banner! sin-sick souls,

That sink and perish in the strife,

Shall touch in faith its radiant hem,

And spring immortal, into life.

5 Fling out the banner! let it float

Skyward and seaward, high and wide

Our glory, only in the cross,

Our only hope, the Crucified.

6 Fling out the banner! wide and high,

Seaward and skyward let it shine;

Nor skill, nor might, nor merit, ours;

We conquer only in that sign.

George W. Doane, 1848.

(1042) Hopeful View.

Yes, we trust the day is breaking;

Joyful times are near at hand;

God, the mighty God, is speaking

By his word in ev'ry land;

When he chooses,

Darkness flies at his command.

2 While the foe becomes more daring,

While he enters like a flood

God, the Savior, is preparing

Means to spread his truth abroad,

Ev'ry language

Soon shall tell the love of God.

3 Oh, 'tis pleasant, 'tis reviving

To our hearts, to hear, each day,

Joyful news, from far arriving,

How the gospel wins its way,

Those enlight'ning

Who in death and darkness lay.

4 God of Jacob, high and glorious,

Let thy people see thy hand;

Let the gospel be victorious,

Through the world in every land;

Then shall idols

Perish, Lord, at thy command.

Thomas Kelly, 1809.
