The Oldest Ballad.

The earliest English ballad is supposed to be the "Cuckoo Song," which commences in the following style:—

"Sumer is incumen in
Lhude sing cuccu,
Groweth sed, and bloweth med,
And sprigth ye wede nu,
Singe cuccu."
