Transcriber’s Note

The photographic images in the original publication are generally of poor quality and there is little that can be done to enhance them. The hand-drawn construction diagrams are clearer although some descriptive text may be too small to read. However the reader can click on any photographic image or diagram to see a larger version. This is particularly helpful when reading descriptive text and looking at fine detail in the construction diagrams.

The cover image was restored by Thiers Halliwell from elements of the original publication and is placed in the public domain.

See [end of this document] for details of corrections and other changes.
