Synoptics: “And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to bear his cross” ([Matt. xxvii, 32]; [Mark xv, 21]; [Luke xxiii, 26]).
John: The cross was borne by Jesus himself ([xix, 17]).
