732. C. M. W. Ward.

Prayer for the Success of the Gospel.

1Great God, the nations of the earth

Are by creation thine;

And in thy works, by all beheld,

Thy radiant glories shine.

2But, Lord, thy greater love has sent

Thy gospel to mankind,

Unveiling what rich stores of grace

Are treasured in thy mind.

3O, when shall these glad tidings spread

The spacious earth around,

Till every tribe and every soul

Shall hear the joyful sound?

4Smile, Lord, on each divine attempt

To spread the gospel's rays,

And build on sin's demolished throne

The temples of thy praise.

733. 7s. & 6s. M. Heber.

Missionary Hymn.

1From Greenland's icy mountains,

From India's coral strand,--

Where Afric's sunny fountains

Roll down their golden sand,--

From many an ancient river,

From many a palmy plain,--

They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

2What though the spicy breezes

Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle;

Though every prospect pleases,

And only man is vile;

In vain with lavish kindness

The gifts of God are strown;

The heathen in his blindness

Bows down to wood and stone.

3Shall we, whose souls are lighted

By wisdom from on high,

Shall we to men benighted

The lamp of life deny?

Salvation! O, salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim,

Till each remotest nation

Has learnt Messiah's name.
