Regimental and other Badges.—"The Prince of Wales's Plume" (the Colonel of the 82nd when raised was attached to the household of the Prince of Wales). Also "The Sphinx" for "Egypt" (1801—to the 40th Foot).

Nickname.—"The Excellers" (of the 40th (XL.) Foot). "The Fighting Fortieth."

Notes.—The 40th captured four standards at Maharajpore (1843).
