Transcriber’s Notes

This transcription follows the text of the 1926 edition published by A. L. Burt Company in 1927. However, the following alterations have been made to correct what are believed to be unambiguous errors in the text:

Four missing quotation marks have been restored.
The word “addess” has been corrected to “address” (Chapter I).
The word “precints” has been corrected to “precincts” (Chapter II).
The word “herb-side” has been corrected to “kerb-side” (Chapter IV).
The word “elphant” has been corrected to “elephant” (Chapter XIII).
