THE 42nd AUSTRALIANS
This battalion raised a band of 8 pipers when they left Australia in 1916. They were largely employed as scouts, runners, etc.
The battalion was subsequently merged into the 41st.
Pipers A. Aitken and R. Gillespie were awarded Military Medals for valuable scouting work carried out prior to the action at Messines in June 1917.
