TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE Hyphenation is inconsistent, and some of the punctuation isnon-standard. The helpful French lady appears as Madame Auguste in thenarrative, but as Mrs. August when she is addressed in English. Oneinstance of Mathison was changed to match all the Mathiesons. One additional change was made and can be identified in the body of the textby a grey dotted underline:
