136. Sʻhagoweʹnōtʻhăʼ, the Spirit of the Tides

Neʼʹ That (it is) ōʹnĕⁿʻdjiʻ ancient time-very hodiʹnoⁿʻsot their (an.)-lodge-stands neʻʹ the yadadīwăʹdĕⁿʼ they-two-uncle (and), nephew neʻʹ the ganoⁿʻsăʼoñʹweʻ. it-lodge, large-(was). Neʼ ʹgwā That-yet (But) diiutʹgon always, (ever) hayăsʹʻnĕⁿʼ he (an.)-lay-supine neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ, he (an.)-ancient-one (was), neʼʹ that diiuiʹwăʼ it-reason (was) neʼʹ hoʻ there (in that place) gäʹit it (n.)-tree-stands gaĕñdăsʹdĕñʼ it (n.)-tree-large-(was) okdeʹoñdoⁿʼ it (n.)-root-had-several neʻʹ the hayăʼdăʼʹgeʻ, his-(an.)-body-on, neʼʹ that nāʹeʻ truly-(verily) dăʼaʹoñʻ not it-able (be) wĕñʹdoⁿʻ ever (sometime) āatʹkĕⁿʻ. could he arise.

Neʼʹhoʻsʻhoñ There-only (alone) deʻhniʼʹdyoⁿʼ, two-they (masc.) abode, oʼyonisʻheʼt. it-long-time-was. Dyĕñgwăʹsʻhoñ Suddenly-just neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ he (an.)-ancient one (was) neʻʹ the haoñwāʹdĕⁿʼ, his-nephew wooʻtʻhāʹhăs he-him-talked to waiʹĕñʼ, he it said “Hoñʹweʻ “Yonder (over there) hoʼʹse thither-thou-go heoñʹweʻ there-where tgayăʼsāʹoñnyoⁿʼ. there-it-one-tiered-many (logs) has. Neʼʹhoʻ There nāʹeʻ truly ĕⁿʻsyĕñʹtʻhoʼ wilt-thou-it-plant neʻʹ the oʻsăeʼʹdăʼ, it (neut.) bean, neʼʹkhoʻ that-and (that-too) onĕñʹoⁿʼ, it (neut.) corn, neʻʹ the onyoⁿʻʹsăʼ-khoʻ. it-squash-and. Okăʼʹoⁿʻ It savory, delicious (is) neʹʻhoʻ, indeed (in fact), gaʹnyoʼ (if it-rules) ĕⁿwadoñʹnĭʼ will it grow (will it-itself make) ĕⁿwatchiʻsʻăʼ-khoʻ. will it itself ripen and. Dāʹ So (there) neʼʹ that (it is) ĕⁿʹhnik, will thou-I-it eat, neʼʹ that ĕⁿʻniʻnheʻʹgoʹoñk will thou-I-it use ever to live gaʹnyoʼ if (= if-it rules) gowāʹnĕⁿʻ much (great amount) ĕⁿʻsyĕñtʹʻhwakuʼ.” thou will it harvest (= unplant).” Neʼʹ That (it was) waiʹĕñʼ he-it-said neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ. he-old-one (ancient one).

Deʼaonisʻheʼʹoñʼ Not-it-long-time-(was) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waiʹĕñʼ he-it said neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ, he (an.) ancient-one (was), “Dāʹ “So (there) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) hoʼseʹgoʻ thence do thou-it-fetch hoñʹweʻ (over there) yonder ganaⁿktāʹgoñ, it (n.)-bed-under, neʼʹhoʻ there gaʹyĕⁿʼ it-lies neʻʹ the găʼăsʹʻhāʼ, it (n.) basket, neʼʹhoʻ there igaāʼʹ it is-contained nāʹeʻ truly neʻʹ the ganĕñʹgweⁿʼ it (n.) seed-grain gayāʹsoⁿʻ.” one-it-has named.”

Dāʹ So (there) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgowā he (an.)-youth (= great child) waāʹgoʼ thence-he-it did fetch neʻʹ the găʼăʻsäʼ it (n.) basket neʼʹhoʹ there waāʹyĕñʼ did he-it lay heoñʹweʻ there-where hayăsʹʻhĕⁿʼ he (an.) lay supine neʼʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ. he (an.) ancient one (was).

Dāʹ So (There) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ he (an.) ancient-one (was) waiʹĕñʼ, he-it-said “Hauʹʼ”, “Go to, “Come neʻʹ the găʼăsʻhäʼ it (n.) basket hoʼseʹgoʻ thence-do-thou-it fetch ganaⁿktaʹgoñ it (n.) couch-under niwăʼsʹʼā, so it-size-small (is), wăsʹʻhĕñʻ (it-hand-full) ten niʹyoñ. so-it-many (are). Dĕⁿ Wilt satʹwāʻhāʼ thou-self-it-gird with neʻʹ the găʼăsʹʻhäʼ. it (n.) basket. Dewagadoĕñdjoñʹniʻ.” I-it-in-need-of-stand.” [[716]]

Dāʹ So (There) neʼʹhoʻ thus (there) naāʹyeʼ thus he-it did neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgowā. he (an.) youth (= great child). Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) haoⁿʻhaⁿʼ he (an.) alone, himself neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ he (an.) ancient one (is) neʼʹhoʻ there găʼăsʻhäʹgoñ it (n.) basket-in heʹ thus (where) niʹyoñ so many it numbers neʻʹ the onĕñʹoⁿʼ. it (n.) corn. Gagweʹgoⁿʻ It-entire (All), heʹ thus niʹyoñ so many it numbers waoñʹdäʻ; did he-it-put in gagweʹgoⁿʻ it (n.) entire (is) neʼʹhoʻ thus (there) naaʹyeʼ so he-it did neʼʹ that wăsʹʻhĕñʻ it (n.) handful = ten niʹyoñʻ so many it numbers neʻʹ the găʼăsʹʻhäʼ; it (n.) basket; oʻsaeʼʹdăʼ-khoʻ it (n.) bean-and neʼʹhoʻ there waoñʹdäʻ, there he-it-put in, gagweʹgoⁿʻ it (n.) entire waadyĕñnoʼkʹdĕⁿʼ. did-he his-task complete.

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) waiʹĕñʼ he-it-said neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ, he (an.) ancient one (was), “Hauʹʼʹ, “Go to, “Come, oʹñĕⁿʻ now (then) neʼʹhoʻ there heoñʹweʻ there-where tgayăʼsaʹoⁿʼ, there-one-clearings has made, neʼʹhoʻ there ĕⁿʻcyĕñʹtʻhoʼ wilt thou-it plant gagweʹgoⁿʻ. it (n.) entire (is). Dāʹ So There, oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) săaʻdĕñʹdĭʻ.” thou (do) start.”

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼgowā he (an.) youth (= great child) waiʹĕñʼ, he-it said, “Nyoʻʹ. “So be it. Neʼʹ That gwāʹ still, yet, too, noñʹ perhaps neʼʹhoʻ there ĕⁿgegeʹoñʼ will (shall) I it pile heoñweʻ there-where neʼʹ that syăsʹʻhĕⁿʼ, thou lying-supine (art), heʹ thus niʹyoñ so many it numbers gĕⁿsʹ customarily desadoĕñdjoñʹnĭʻ.” thou-it-in need of, standest.

Dāʹ So There oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼgowā he (an.) youth (= great child) waoʼsaiʹeⁿʻ. did he-hasten. Neʻhoʻ There waaksaiʹĕñʼ did-he-it-dish lay găʹsnĕⁿʼ it (n.) bark neʻʹ the gakʹsăʼ it (n.) dish (bowl), ononʹdäʼ it (n.) hominy igāʼʹ, it-contained (is), gadjisdoñiăʼsʻhäʻ-khoʻ, it (n.) fire poker-and, gaganʹiăʼsʻhäʼ-khoʻ, it (n.)-knife-and, oäʻkwăʼ-ʹkhoʻ it (n.) bread-and gagaisdĕⁿʹdoⁿʼ. it (n.)-corn-hulled-by-boiling.

Gaʹnioʼ As soon as waadiĕñnuʹʼkdĕⁿʼ did he-his task complete oʹnĕⁿʻ now then nāʹeʻ truly waiʹĕñʼ, he-it said “Gnoʼʹsĕⁿ, “Oh, uncle, “Oh, mother’s brother, oʹnĕⁿʻ now then ĕⁿgiĕñtʻʹhwăʻsăʼ shall I-it-(to) plant go heʹoñweʻ there-where tgayăʼʹsaoⁿʼ.” there it-one-clearings has made.” Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waaʻdĕñʹdĭʼ. did-he (an.) start.

Wăʼhāʹioⁿʼ There he arrived heʹoñweʻ there-where tgayăʼʹsaoⁿʼ, there one-it-made-clearings, oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) nāʹeʻ truly wooioʼʹdĕⁿʹ. did-he-it-work. Waaeoʼdōʹgoʼ, Did he-it-weeds-remove, waaeʻdawĕñʹieʼ-khoʻ. did he-it-earth-stir up-and. Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) nāʹeʻ truly [[717]] waayĕñʹtʻhoʼ did he-it-plant toʻkaʼʹăʻ numbering few, few niʹ so many ganăʼgĕⁿsʹʻhäge. it (n.)-hills-number. Dāʹ So (then) diĕñgwăsʹʻhoñ all at once, suddenly oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) hotʻhoñʹdeʼ he-it-heard daʻhadĕñnōʹdĕⁿʼ thence he his song-uttered neʻʹ the honoʹʼsĕⁿʻ. he-him-uncle. (mother’s brother). (is) Gaĕñnagoñʹwăʻ It (n.) song-in hotʻhyuʹwi, he-it-tells, hāʹdoⁿʻ, he-it-says, repeatedly “Oʹnĕⁿʻ, “Now (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ, now (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) giʹ I-it think neʻʹ the oʼgatʹkĕⁿʻ, did I-myself-raise up, oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waiʻʹ.” certainly.”

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) waiʻʹ certainly, (of course) neʻʹ the haksăʼgōʹwa he (an.) child-great (is) saaʻdĕñʹdĭʼ again-he-departed, (= went home) waadiănōʹäd. did-he-his-pace-hasten. Wăʼdjiʹăʻ (While-small) In a short time oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) saaʹyoⁿʼ again-he-returned neʻʹ the heʹoñweʻ there-where tʻhodinoⁿʹʻsot. there-they (an.)-it lodges stands. Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the hăksăʼʹgōwa he (an.) child-great (is) wooyeʹnāʼ did he-him-seize neʻʹ the honoʼʹsĕⁿʻ he-him-uncle (= mother’s brother) (is). waiʹĕñʼ did he-it say. khoʻ, and “Ānăʼawĕñʻʹ “What it happened haknoʼʹsĕⁿʻ?” he-me-uncle (= mother’s brother) (is)?” Daāiʻwăʼsäʹkoʼ Thence he-it replied neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ he-ancient-one (is) waiʹĕñʼ, did he-it-say, “Oʼkhăʼdatʹʻhĕⁿʻ “Did my throat become dry neʼʹ that oiʻʹwăʼ it (n.) reason (is) oʼgadĕñnōʹdĕⁿʼ.” did I song-utter, sing.”

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgōwa he (an.)-child-great (is) waiʹĕñʼ, did he-it-say, “Oʹnĕⁿʻ “Now (then) hoʼgeʹgoʼ thence I-it (n.) fetch neʻʹ the oʻneʹgănos. it (n.) water. Hauʼʹ, Come, oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) sneʹgihă.” thou-it (n.)-liquid drink (do).”

Gaʹnioʼ As soon as (= it-it-rules) waaʻneʹgihăʼ did he-it-liquid-drink neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ he-ancient-one (is) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waiʻʹ certainly (of course) saādyăsʹʻhĕñʼ. again he-self-laid supine. Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the hăksăʼʹgōwa he-child-great (is) waiʹĕñʼ, did he-it say, “Gnoʼʹsĕñʻ, “My uncle, “Oh, my uncle, hauʼʹ Come oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) dĕⁿsadyeʹĕⁿk-sʻhoñ shall-you quiet-just keep ĕⁿʻsyasʹʻhĕñdăʼk.” shall you-supine keep-lying.”

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the hagĕⁿʹdjiʻ he (an.) ancient one (is) waiʹĕñʼ, did he-it say, “Giwāʹdĕⁿʼ, “Oh, my nephew, neʼʹhoʻ there (where) hoñsāʹseʻ thither again go thou heʹoñweʻ there where tgayăʼʹsaoⁿʼ there one-it (n.)-clearings-made neʼʹhoʻ there nāʹeʻ truly ĕⁿʻsyĕñʹtʻhoʼ shalt thou-it-plant neʻʹ the onĕñʹoⁿʼ. it (n.)-corn. Tĕⁿʼʹĕⁿʻ Not (it is) ganoⁿsgoñʹwăʻ it (n.) lodge-in deʼsgaʹyĕⁿʼ, at all again it-lies (is), gagweʹgoⁿʻ it (n.) all (= it-(n.) entire) oʼgāʹit did-it-spill out waiʻʹ; certainly; gagweʹgoⁿʻ it (n.)-all (= it-(n.) entire) dĕⁿtcʹhek. shalt thou it-gather up. Dāʹ So (then) djaʹgoⁿʻ do thou (be) brave = hurry up diqʹ.” moreover.”

Gaʹnioʼ As soon as (it-it-rules) neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgōwa he (an.) child-great (is) gagweʹgoⁿʻ it (n.)-all (= it (n.) entire) săasʹʼăʻt again he-it-finished saasnoⁿʹkwĕñs again he-it-gathered up [[718]] neʻʹ the oaāʼʹgeʻ it (n.) path-on oʼgāʹit did-it-spill out tchisʻhădăkʹheʼ as again he ran (homeward) neʻʹ the onĕñʹoⁿʼ. it-(n.) corn. Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) āʹeʼ again sāāyĕñtʻhoʹʻsăʼ. again he-it to-plant went.

Agwasʹ Very āʹeʼ again (once more) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) tʻhoʹhăʻ nearly (close by) hĕñoⁿsʹʼăʻt will he-it complete (finish) aāyĕñtʹʻhoʼ would he-it-plant oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) āʹeʼ again hotʻhoñʹdeʼ he-it-hears (= is hearing) daādĕñnōʹdĕⁿʼ thence he-his song uttered neʻʹ the honoʼʹsĕⁿʻ, he-him-uncle of (is), hādoⁿʼʼ, he kept saying, “Oʹnĕⁿʻ, “Now (then), oʹnĕⁿʻ, now (then), oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) giʼʹ I think oʼgatʹkĕⁿʻ. did I-self-raise (= I arose). Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) waiʻʹ.” certainly.” indeed.

Dāʹ So (Then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) neʻʹ the hăksăʼʹgōwa he (an.) child-great (is) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waiʻʹ certainly hăʼdoñsāĕⁿʻʹdāt thence again he ran heʹoñweʻ there (where) tʻhodinoⁿʻsăgāʹioⁿʻ. there their (masc.) lodge old (is) (ancient).

Dyĕñgwăʹsʻhoñ Suddenly, all at once, oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) hăʼdewăsĕñʹnoⁿ just it-half way, middle-(was) neʼʹhoʻ there (where) wăʼhadākʹheʼ thither he running went oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waiʻʹ truly indeed hotʻhoñʹdeʼ he-it-hears wăʼotʹkāeʻ did-it-make a sound, noise otkāeʼʹnī it makes sound loud “băʼʹ,” “băʼʹ,” neʼʹ that diioīʹwăʼ there it-it caused oʼdwadektēʹnyăʼk did-it (n.) root break neʼʹ that heʹʼoñweʻ there (where) hayăsʹʻhĕⁿʼ he (an.) lay supine neʻʹ the honoʼʹsĕⁿ. he-him-uncle. Dāʹ So (then) neʼʹ that nāʹeʻ truly oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) hoñsaāʹyoⁿʼ there again he-did arrived heʹoñweʻ there (where) tʻhodinoⁿʻʹsot there it-them-lodge stood tĕⁿʼʹĕⁿʻ not deʼsʻhĕⁿʼʹdyoⁿʼ at all again he abides (at home) noōnoʼʹsĕⁿ, the-his-uncle (mother’s brother), oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) deʼsgatgăʼʹhoʻ. not at all again anywhere.

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgōwa he (an.)-child-great (is) waoʹʻsĕⁿs; did it-him-grieve; oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) wāʹēʼ did he-it-think oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) noñʹ probably ĕⁿwagidĕñsʹtʻheʼt, will-it-me to be poor-cause, awĕñdoñʹnyăʼt-khoʻ it-it-lonely has made and oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) oʼwāʹdoⁿʼʼ it became neʼʹ that diioīʹwăʼ there it-it caused neʼʹ that oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) deʼsgatgăʼʹhoʻ at all again anywhere noōnoʼʹsĕⁿʻ. the-he-him uncle (mother’s brother).

Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) nāʹeʻ of course waăsʹdāĕñʼ he (an.) wept hoʼnigoⁿähetʹgĕⁿʼs-khoʻ it-him-mind-grieves and oʼyoʹnisʻheʼt. it-it-to last caused. Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (there) nāʹeʻ verily wāĕñniʹʻhĕⁿʼ did he-it-cease heʻʹ where hasdāʹʻhăʼ he was weeping hoʼnigoⁿähetʹgĕⁿʼs-khoʻ it-him-mind-grieves-and, ganoⁿsăkdăʹdieʼs. it (n.) lodge beside (here and there). Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) hoñsaāʹyoⁿʼ thither again he entered [[719]] ganoⁿsăʹgoñ it (n.) lodge-in waĕñnoⁿdoñʹnyoⁿʼ-khoʻ did he think repeatedly-and heʻʹ where nionăkdōʹdĕⁿʻ. such-his-situation-kind of (was). Dāʹ So (there) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) doñdāăyăʹgĕⁿʼt thence he came forth wāēʹʼq did he-it-think gatgatʹʻhoʻ let me look kāʹweʻ whither noñʹ probably heāwēʹnoñ thither he has gone noōnoʼʹsĕⁿʻ. the he-him-uncle (is). Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) nāʹĕʻ verily oʼtʻhādawĕñʹnyeʼ did he-self-move from place to place ganoⁿsăkdăʹdyeʼ it (n.)—lodge beside (around) hokdoñʹdyeʼ he-it-looked-closely along adeyĕñnoñʹniʼʹgeʻ, a way careful-in, heʹʻheʼ he-it-thought adiʼʹgwă possibly noñʹ probably neʼʹhoʻ there (where) hayanāĕñʹnyoⁿʼ he-track-appeared-successively neʻʹ the honoʼʹsĕⁿʻ. he-him uncle (is).

Dyĕñgwăʹsʻhoñ Suddenly all at once oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) wāaʹgĕⁿʼ did-he-it-see heʹoñweʻ there (where) heodakhēʹnoñ, thither he running-has gone, neʼʹ that neʻʹ the niyoʻcyosʹtoⁿ such it-it-deep-has gone (his tracks) heʹoñweʻ there (where) heodăkhēʹnoñ. thither he running-has gone. Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waāʹgĕⁿʼ did he-it-see oʹnĕⁿʻ now then hegääʻgwĕⁿʼsʹgwā thither-it (n.) Sunsets towards heodăkhēʹnoñ thither he running-has gone noōnoʼʹsĕⁿʻ. the-he-him-uncle.

Oʹnĕⁿʻ Now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgōwa he (an.)-child-great (is) waiʹĕñʼ, did-he-it-say, “Niʹyoʻ. “So be it. Neʼʹ That gwāʹ just noñʹ perhaps neʼʹhoʻ there (where) oʹnĕⁿʻ now then hĕñʹgeʼ thither will-I go nĕñʹ this one iʼʹăʻ I (myself) heʹoñweʻ there (where) heawēʹnoñ thither he-has-gone neʻʹ the haknoʼʹsĕⁿʻ. he-me-uncle. Ĕⁿeyanĕñʹauñʼ Will-I-him-track take along nāʹeʻ verily oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) neʻʹ the haknoʼʹseⁿʻ.” he-me-uncle (is).”

Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) neʻʹ the haksăʼʹgōwa he (an.) child-great (is) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) wăʼhāʹgoʼ did-he-it get neʻʹ the hoʼĕñʹnŏⁿʼ his-bow găʼnoⁿʹ-khoʻ, it (n.) arrow-and, dāʹ so (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) wooyanĕñʹauñʼ did-he-him-track take along neʻʹ the honoʼʹ he-him-uncle sĕⁿʻ; (mother’s brother); dāʹ so (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) waaʻdĕñʹdĭʼ did he depart oʼtʻhĕⁿʻʹdāt, did he-run, oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) wooyanĕñʹauñʼ. did-he-him-track take along. Gaʻhădăgoñʹsʻhoñʼ It (n.) forest-in-only hădakheʼʹsʻhoñ he running only goes sĕⁿʹ three năʼōʹdăʼ so many it-night-passed oʹnēⁿʻ now (then) neʼʹhoʻ there (where) waāʹyoⁿʼ did he arrive ganyodāʹeʼ, it (n.) lake-stood out neʼʹhoʻ there (where) nāʹeʻ indeed heʻʹhodyāʹnoʼk there-his-trail ended noonoʼʹsĕⁿʻ, the he-him-uncle, neʼʹhoʻ there (where) wooĕⁿʼʹheʼt did he stop oʼtʻhatgăʹdoⁿʻ-khoʻ. did he look around and. Dāʹ So (then) oʹnĕⁿʻ now (then) oʼtʻhāʹdăʼt did he stand still ganyadākʹdăʼ. it (n.) lake beside.

Dāʹ So (then) neʻhoʹʻ-sʻhoñʹ there (where)- just, only hadāʹdieʼs he stood in different places dyĕñgwăʻʹsʻhoñ suddenly just, all at once waāʹgĕⁿʼ did he-it-see [[720]] weʹĕⁿʻ far away dăgagăweʼʹ there it (n.)-paddled gaʻhoñʹwăʼ it (n.) canoe oʻstoäʹdieʼ. it (n.) swift went.
