TAKING UP THE CROSS.

BY JOSEPH STENNETT.

Jesus, I my cross have taken,

All to leave and follow thee;

Naked, poor, despised, forsaken,

Thou from hence my all shalt be.

Let the world neglect and leave me;

They have left my Saviour too;

Human hopes have oft deceived me;

Thou art faithful, thou art true.

Perish, earthly fame and treasure;

Come disaster, scorn, and pain;

In thy service, pain is pleasure;

With thy favor, death is gain.

Oh! 'tis not in grief to harm me,

While thy bleeding love I see;

Oh! 'tis not in joy to charm me,

When that love is hid from me.
