A. S. BARNES & COMPANY,
SCHOOL BOOK PUBLISHERS,
NEW YORK AND CHICAGO,
The List.—The New National Series of School and College Text Books comprises nearly 400 different volumes.
The Aim.—Practical utility and the best results.
When you want a spade you buy a spade, not a parlor ornament with ivory handle and Damascus steel. Experience tells you that for utility the best is the cheapest! So in the selection of school books, the best books are made to be used. They are the outcome of faithful work of practical teachers in the school-room.
The following authors of the National Series will be recognized the world over for their well-known services in the school-room.
| James Monteith, | J. Dorman Steele, | J. M. B. Sill, |
| Charles Davies, | Samuel W. Clark, | Alphonso Wood, |
| Joseph Ficklin, | Andrew Peabody, | J. Madison Watson. |
These men have produced the best Readers, Spellers, Geographies, Arithmetics, Histories, Grammars, Science and Modern Language Text Books. Each one of them has served a long apprenticeship in the school-room. In selecting, therefore, be sure to ask for
BARNES’ NEW NATIONAL READERS.
In five numbers. Perfectly graded. The educational gems of the decade. Universally approved by teachers and school officers for typographical beauty and practical utility. Prices, 20c., 35c., 50c., 70c. and 90c.
BARNES’ SCHOOL GEOGRAPHIES.
In two books. Prof. Monteith devotes his entire time to this work, and has produced two working manuals which contains more valuable features in the same space than any other author. Separate editions for different States. Monteith’s Boys’ and Girls’ Atlas (for oral instruction), 50c.
MONTEITH’S NEW PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY.
This subject is too apt to be neglected, but the fault has been with the text books. Here is a book which gives the latest view of the whole subject adequate treatment in the briefest space and most entertaining manner. Price, $1.00.
BARNES’ NEW ARITHMETICS.
In two books. This series is the work of Prof. Joseph Ficklin and others, and may be said to represent the outgrowth of our previous mathematical publications by Charles Davies, William G. Peck, etc. They present the clearest possible course of instruction, giving a minimum of theory with a maximum of practice. They are very widely approved. Prices, elementary, 35c.; national, 75c.
BARNES’ BRIEF HISTORY SERIES.
The United States, France, Greece, ancient peoples, mediæval and modern peoples, and the General History of the world, are treated in separate volumes, all of moderate size, profusely but judiciously illustrated, and skillfully arranged with the necessities of the class room constantly in view. They have been the models upon which other subsequent publications have been made, but are still unrivaled and alone. They are more widely introduced in some sections than all other series combined.
STEELE’S SCIENCE TEXTS.
Seven volumes. Each volume on a separate subject, viz.: Philosophy, Chemistry, Astronomy, Geology, Zoology, Botany and Physiology. No one has ever succeeded in awakening a love for science in young minds equal to Steele. His plan is scientific and treatment popular. In each branch he has had the co-operation of specialists.
HYGIENE AND PHYSIOLOGY.
A law requiring the study of Physiology (with special reference to the effects of alcohol and narcotics on the human body), in all schools and all grades, has been lately passed in very many States and Territories. To meet the requirements of this law, we have issued, with the indorsement of a host of Educators and the Superintendent of Scientific Instruction of the W. C. T. U., the following text books:
| I. | Child’s Health Primer. For the youngest children. Cloth, 12mo. Illustrated. 40c. |
| II. | Hygiene for Young People. For intermediate grades. Cloth, 12mo. Illustrated. 60c. |
| III. | Steele’s Hygienic Physiology. For high schools, academies and colleges. 12mo, Cloth. Illustrated. $1. (The same, abridged, 50c.) |
This series has already been adopted by State boards of education (Vermont, Michigan, Kentucky, Delaware, North Carolina, Oregon, etc.), and is rapidly being taken by counties, cities and towns throughout the United States. Begin with the rising generation.
WORMAN’S MODERN LANGUAGES.
French, German and Spanish are here taught by the natural method. The primary books of this series furnish the best possible introduction to the study of these languages. Price, 50c. each.
OTHER SUBJECTS
include Barnes’ Drawing Books, Sill’s Grammar, Bardeen’s Rhetoric, Searing’s Virgil, Watson’s Spellers, Davies’ Mathematics, Jenkins’ Dictionary, Wood’s Botanies, Cleveland’s Literature, Boyd’s Poets, Jepson’s Music Reader, Martin’s Civil Government, Janet’s Morals, etc., etc.
Text Books covering nearly every subject taught in school or college will be found fully described in our new Descriptive Catalogue. Mailed free on application. Correspondence cordially invited. Sample pages free. Address
