LEGEND OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY
Sebert the first East Saxon king,
Who of our Christ did preach and sing
He built the first church on the ground
Where fair Westminster now is found.
And to this church 'tis often said
Came good St. Peter from the dead
And with the angels sweet and fair
Descending on a golden stair
Reaching from the Heavens above
And bringing to this earth pure love.
He consecrated and he blest
This Christian church above the rest
Of churches in old England's Isle
And on this site the saints still smile.
