. However far we go, we can never avoid an ultimate unknowable. This perfectly obvious contention is sometimes obscured because the end of the series may be so far removed as to escape our attention; but this is merely a mental subterfuge, a form of mental laziness.
Thus, the Greeks wondered why the earth did not fall. An explanation was soon forthcoming. The giant Atlas holds it on his shoulders. But what, then, prevented the giant Atlas from falling together with the earth he was carrying? The nether regions on which he stands give him support. This is as far as the explanation went, for no theory seems to have been advanced explaining why the nether regions did not fall, together with Atlas and the earth.
We might consider more scientific examples; but we should find that the case was always the same.
