To find the effective length of a beam supported at both ends when the position of the load is varied:

Rule.—Divide four times the product of the distances of the load from both supports by the whole span, in feet.

Example.—Find the effective length of a beam the supports of which are 6 feet apart, the load acting at a point 1 foot from its centre.
