SPECIFIC CHARACTER.

Heath, with beardless tips within the blossom: leaves by sixes or eights, linear, and tremulous: flowers crowded, club-shaped, hairy, and white.

DESCRIPTION.

Stem upright, a foot and a half high, branching but little: the smaller branches simple, and covered with leaves.

Leaves by sixes or eights, linear, tremulous, and smooth; furrowed beneath, and tapering into hair-like footstalks.

Flowers grow near the ends of the branches in crowded whorls, and in a horizontal direction; footstalks coloured, with three linear floral leaves.

Empalement four-leaved: leaflets lance-shaped, and pressed to the blossom.

Blossom club-shaped, an inch long, white, and closely beset with downy hairs: the segments of the border are rolled back, and slightly notched.

Chives. Eight hair-like threads; tips within the blossom, and beardless.

Pointal. Seed-bud turban-shaped, downy on the upper part, and white; greenish below, and glandular at the base.
