His purse he flung into my lap, but still

I did not stir his orders to fulfil.

He cast his eyes around, then gazed on me,

The object sought for he could nowhere see.

'Woman!' he cried, 'hast thou thy trust betrayed?

Thy treach'ry base shall swiftly be repaid.'

He seized my hand, nigh crushed it in his own,

Yet still I uttered not the slightest groan,

But flung his gaze back with a fearless eye,

And said, 'Revenged, I care not if I die!
