This book, originally written and published in French in 1905, was at once recognised as the work of a musician of deep insight and power of interpretation, and in less than three years it was translated into German and published in a greatly expanded and revised version. In 1908 Mr. Ernest Newman approached the author with a view to translating it into English, and permission was cordially given; more than this, the author took a great interest in the translation and himself largely altered and added to the text in order to make it more complete.
