Artie perceived that he would have to explain.

“You tell by the dirt,” he said seriously.

“The dirt?” echoed Margy. “What dirt?”

“The dirt on the roots of the cabbage,” said Artie. “If a lot of dirt sticks, that’s a sign you’re going to be rich; if there isn’t much dirt, you’re going to be poor.”
