Baldwin John, Wharfs, North side, who is liable to a penalty of £5 (which will be enforced by the Vestry) for every neglect or refusal to remove the dust when required from the houses of the inhabitants. No payment can be demanded from the inhabitants by any persons employed in that service.

FIRES.

The Fire Ladders are kept at the Engine house in Hermitage street.

As fires often happen through the negligence and carelessness of Servants, it is enacted by the 14th Geo. III., cap. 78, sec. 84.—“That if any Menial or other Servant or Servants, through negligence or carelessness shall fire, or cause to be fired, any Dwelling-house, Out-house, Houses, or other Building, such Servant or Servants, being thereof lawfully convicted by the Oath of one or more credible Witness or Witnesses made before two or more of her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, shall Forfeit and Pay the sum of £100 unto the Churchwardens of such Parish where such fire shall happen, to be distributed among the sufferers by such fire in such proportions as to the said Churchwardens shall seem just; and in case of default or refusal to pay the same immediately after such conviction, the same being lawfully demanded by the said Churchwardens, that then and in such case, such Servant or Servants shall, by warrant under the hands and seals of two or more Justices of the Pearce, be committed to the Common Gaol or House of Correction, as the said Justices shall think fit, for the space of Eighteen Months, there to be kept to hard labour.”

COAL PLATES

By the 5th Geo. IV., cap. 126, section 72, any person who shall leave the Coal Plate or other covering of or belonging to any Hole or Funnell leading to any Cellar unfastened, or without being properly and sufficiently fastened and secured from moving, incurs a penalty of Five Pounds.
