LEFT FRONT: Cast on 46 sts. 1st ROW: * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat 1st row 6 times (seed st). START PATTERN: 1st ROW (right side): 3 seed sts, P 2, K 4, P 2, * K 1, P 2, K 4, P 2, repeat from * twice, work 8 sts in seed st for front border. Work in pattern as established working 8 border sts in seed st throughout until front measures same as back to underarm ending at armhole edge. SHAPE ARMHOLE: Bind off 4 sts at armhole edge. Keeping continuity of pattern work even until armhole measures 2½ inches ending with 9th pattern row. Cut yarn. SHAPE NECK: Beg at neck edge, place 17 sts on holder, continue in pattern dec 2 sts at neck edge every other row 3 times—19 sts. Work even until armholes measure same as back ending with 9th pattern row. SHAPE SHOULDER: Bind off 19 sts. Mark position for 5 buttons evenly spaced on left front edge, 1st buttonhole ¾ inch above lower edge, and the last buttonhole ¾ inch below neck edge.
RIGHT FRONT: Work same as left front reversing shaping and working buttonholes opposite markers.
BUTTONHOLES: Work 3 sts, bind off next 2 sts, work across. On next row cast on 2 sts over bound-off sts.
FINISHING: Sew shoulder and side seams.
NECKBAND: With right side facing, pick up 71 sts including sts on holders. Work 8 rows in seed st, working 1 buttonhole in 4th row. Bind off. Sew buttons in place.
SLEEVES: Cast on 45 sts. Work in seed st for 7 rows inc 10 sts evenly spaced across last row—55 sts. START PATTERN: 1st ROW (right side): K 1, * P 2, K 4, P 2, K 1, repeat from * across row. 2nd ROW: P 1, K 2, P 4, * K 2, work 5 sts in next st, K 2, P 4, repeat from * across row ending with K 2, P 1. Work in pattern as established on sweater working first and last sts in stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) until there are 8 complete patterns ending with 9th pattern row. Bind off. Sew sleeves in position sewing ½ inch of upper sleeve seams to bound-off sts of underarm. Sew sleeve seams.
HAT
Cast on 91 sts, and work 11 rows in seed st. Work in pattern same as sleeve until 7 patterns are completed. Bind off.
