"Not—yet," admitted Vandervent.

Vandervent stared at Garland.
"What's this man to do with it?" he asked.
"Material witness," said Spofford.
"But, if Carey left a written confession, you wouldn't need a witness," said Vandervent.
"H'm—no," conceded Spofford. "Only—an accessory after the fact—that's what this guy is——"
Vandervent turned to Randall.
"Take this man outside—and watch him," he ordered.
