“No; only cautious. I don’t intend to be overheard,” I replied quietly. He took his seat then and turned to me a listening but impassive face.
“You had some negotiations recently in regard to certain papers?”
“Ah!” Recognition and interest now took the place of impassiveness.
“They have come into my possession.”
“How?”
“That is of no consequence. I have them. And—” I paused and met his intent gaze—“they may find their way to you.”
He thought rapidly.
“The price, sir?”
“You mean money? I am not for sale. I say they may find their way to you.”
“I do not understand you.”
