Adieu. — Believe me, etc., etc.
In Fielding's burlesque tragedy,
The Tragedy of Tragedies; or the Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great
(1730), occur the lines —
"Arthur, beware; I must this moment hence,
Not frighted by your voice, but by the cock's."
The burlesque was altered by Kane O'Hara, and published as performed at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, in 1805. In this prompt-book version (act i) appear the lines quoted by Byron.
"Ghost. Grizzle's Rebellion,
What need I tell you on?
Or by a red cow
Tom Thumb devoured?
(cock crows)
Hark the cock crowing!
I must be going:
I can no more {vanishes}."
