It was at Smyrna that the two first cantos of

Childe Harold

were completed. To his original MS. of the poem is prefixed the following memorandum:—

"Byron, Ioannina in Albania.
Begun October 31st, 1809;
Concluded Canto 2d, Smyrna,
March 28th, 1810.
— Byron."
