Gillies, in his

Memoirs of a Literary Veteran

(vol. ii. p. 4), says that in 1809 he addressed an anonymous letter to Brydges, containing some thoughts on the advantages of retirement (the subject of

Childe Alarique

). The letter, printed in

The Ruminator

, began his literary career and introduced him to Brydges.
