But, for my part, and I follow the hedonists in this; I deny entirely that the relation of value is a relation of equivalence. The proof of this has already been supplied by others, and there is no occasion to repeat it.

[79] Labriola—who reproduces Marx's style very well here and there in his own—writes in his essay on 'Das Kommunistische Manifest,' 2nd Ed., p. 79. 'The Manifesto ... does not shed tears over nothing. The tears of things have already risen on their feet of themselves, like a spontaneously vengeful force.' The tears which rise on their feet may make the hair rise on the head of a man of moderate taste; but the expression, although violently imaginative, is not in seventeenth century style.
