All these laws hold for cardinals, whether finite or infinite, and for finite ordinals. But when we come to infinite ordinals, or indeed to relation-numbers in general, some hold and some do not. The commutative law does not hold; the associative law does hold; the distributive law (adopting the convention we have adopted above as regards the order of the factors in a product) holds in the form
