DRISCOLL (agitated and becoming violent)

(He is roughly grasped and restrained by the Gunner.)
LYDIA (becomes hysterical)
They mean to burn me. I can’t bear it! Oh, Robert, help me! Father! Father!
ROBERT (leaping to her, taking her in his arms)
They shan’t touch you, Lydia! Sweetheart!
BIMBO (roaring)
Drag him away from her! Stop that!
(The Deaf-and-Dumb Man and the Pirate with the Braided Beard spring upon Robert and Lydia, dragging them apart and holding them fast.)
LYDIA (stretching out her arms despairingly to Robert as she is dragged from him)
Robert, beloved——
ROBERT (struggling to reach her)
My love! My love forever——
DRISCOLL (astonished and angry)
What! What do you call each other?
BIMBO (indignantly)
I should think you would ask that! They have no decency at all.
LYDIA (faintly, as the Pirate with the Braided Beard forces her again into her chair)
