THE TROUBLED VOICE (weakly)
Who is that?
THE GIRL (plaintively)
Whose voice is that?
THE TROUBLED VOICE
Is that you? Lydia?
THE GIRL (faintly)
Robert? Is it Robert?
ROBERT (of the troubled voice)
Yes. They’ve lashed me beneath a table—or it might be a bench—and it’s bolted to the deck. What of you, Lydia?
LYDIA
My hands are tied behind me. My ankles are lashed together.
ROBERT
Villains!
LYDIA (faintly)
Bloodhounds! Bloodhounds of the sea, Robert! (He groans; she goes on.) When they began leaping aboard us—ah, the horrid sight!—I saw you fighting among them. I tried to reach you——
ROBERT
I tried to come to you, Lydia!
LYDIA (weeping)
Dear heart, I saw it!
