Ich habs gewagt.[18]

[18.] The song was printed separately in 1521 as Ain new lied herr Vlrichs von Hutten. The phrase ich habs gewagt, translating the Latin jacta est alea, became a sort of motto with Hutten after he had taken, in the fall of 1520, the momentous step of defending Luther and advocating a German war of liberation.

[19.] Mit sinnen, ‘deliberately.’

[20.] Noch = dennoch.

[21.] Spüren trew, ‘perceive stedfastness,’ ‘see that I am faithful’ to the decision taken.

[22.] Main = meine; ‘I intend the weal not of one only (myself), but of the whole fatherland.’
