Remark (Trick 8).—Well played by A. He sees that if he obtains the lead on the second round of diamonds he must continue the spade suit, a course demonstrably fatal to him, unless his partner has the queen of diamonds together with the long hearts (see fall of hearts, Trick 7). By throwing the king to the ace A avoids the lead, and saves the game if his partner has either queen or knave of diamonds (as may be seen by placing the cards), unless the adversaries continue the spade suit, when the game cannot be saved, by any course of play. This clever coup occurred in actual play.
