At the right, a female in a costume of extreme simplicity sits under a jutting rose branch, while awaiting a cupid who is seen struggling towards her with a large volume. Of the same Quaker family. A bit of landscape introduced below the shield, as was often Maverick’s way; a stretch of water, trees, books, and writing materials complete the adjuncts. The name is signed on an open scroll; this lower part of the plate is very similar to the plate of Prosper Wetmore by the same engraver. Of New York.
