This work is intended to furnish a complete account of the leading personages, the Institutions, Art, Social Life, Writings, and Controversies of the Christian Church from the time of the Apostles to the age of Charlemagne. It commences at the period at which the “Dictionary of the Bible” leaves off, and forms a continuation of it; it ceases at the age of Charlemagne, because (as Gibbon has remarked) the reign of this monarch forms the important link of ancient and modern, of civil and ecclesiastical history. It thus stops short of what we commonly call the Middle Ages.
⁂ Arrangements have now been made with the booksellers enabling them to offer special terms for the complete work.
Intending purchasers should make application to their bookseller, from whom all particulars may be obtained.
