The king, being of a Spanish family, succeeded to the crown of Spain in 1759, when he carried with him many of the workmen and his own tastes, and established there the manufactory of Buen Retiro, of which is a brief account hereafter. After his departure the factory languished, lacking his interested inspiration.
The marked originality of the Capo di Monte porcelain is the designs in relief which were impressed upon the plaques, and also upon teacups, vases, etc. These were very delicately and carefully stippled in colors, and this distinguishes them from imitations and reproductions which have been made in great numbers at Florence, and which are sold at very much smaller prices.
