Coarse, rough. Used of the weather. A fisherman will say, in a curious phrase, ‘Coarse weather, don’t it?’

Coase, to pet, stroke—e.g., ‘he was coasing his dog.’ The ’s’ is pronounced as in ‘roast.’ (Not in E. D. D.) The word no doubt comes from the same root as the well-known word cosset.
