FOOTNOTES:
[1] Ski is really the same word as the English skid, meaning a slide, or something to slide upon, the affinity being even greater in the Swedish term skid (plural, skidor), meaning slides or skates. Originally it doubtless springs from the Finnish subsi or suksi, by which appellation the ski were probably known long before their introduction to Scandinavia.
