In describing the growth of the United States to the position which this country now occupies, Professor Coolidge begins with the people themselves as the controlling force in any political policy, tracing the formation of their ideals, and the conditions under which these ideals have been changed. It has become a matter of common observation that the Spanish War marked a distinct division in the life of the American people, that our horizon has broadened until this country now possesses all the advantages and all the responsibilities that this expanded attitude involves.
