David took up his double pen again.
“Oh I wish somebody else had done it,” he said, “for I missed Owlers jawing the seal. But it was my idea.”
Maddox got up.
“Well, you’ll get into worse trouble if you don’t look out,” he said. “I’m talking you over with Adams.”
“Oh, may I come and listen outside the door?”
“You may not.”
“Well, stick up for me,” said David encouragingly.
Maddox went back to his house master, still giggling.
“Well, did David make the darkness?” he asked.
