"Before whom did you 'lay' it?"
"The magistrate."

"Last Friday."
"The date, please!"
"That would be the 18th."
"The 18th of August! And the church was burnt on the morning of the 25th of June! How is it that it took you eight weeks all but two days to 'lay your information' against me?"
