“You have wounded me!” said Leopoldina, sobbing. “I said it for your good, because I thought it the best thing you could do. If I had the money I would give it to you,—believe me.”
There was a knock at the door.
“Who is there?” asked Leopoldina.
“I,” answered a hoarse voice.
“It is my husband. That animal has not left the house to-day. I cannot open now,” she said at the door. “Come back by-and-by.”
Luiza dried her eyes and took up her hat.
“When will you come again?” Leopoldina asked her.
“As soon as I can; if I cannot come I will write.”
“Very well. Meanwhile I will think what can be done.”
Luiza caught her by the arm.
