As the girls entered the great reception-room where the young men were now waiting for them, it would not have been difficult for an outsider to read from their faces the fact that something unpleasant had happened. The Crowell boys and Wallace and Hitchens, who all instantly guessed at the portent of the interview, could not hide their embarrassment. Both Cryton and McDaniel looked frankly curious.
