Brought forth by Wisdom, nursed by Discipline,

By Patience taught, by Perseverance crown’d,

For what are virtues? (formidable name!)

What, but the fountain, or defence, of joy?

Why, then, commanded? Need mankind commands,

At once to merit, and to make, their bliss?—
