I. e., or i. e., Id est. That is. In reading aloud, one gives the English words only.

I. H. S., sometimes explained as Iesus Hominum Salvator. Jesus the Saviour of Men. More properly, this abbreviation merely means “Jesus.” It is made up of the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus—ΙΗΣΟΥΣ. The H, in I. H. S., is really the Greek letter êta, from which we get our capital E.

I. N. R. I., Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudæorum. Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
